Lorna Jane Review 2026: Stay-Put Leggings and Named Fabrics From the Brand Born in 1989

Six a.m., the light barely up, and you're pulling on leggings in the dark. You want the waistband to stay put when you drop into a lunge, a pocket that actually holds your phone, and a fabric that doesn't go see-through the moment you bend over. Then you want to walk straight from class to the café without feeling like you're still in gym gear. That's the life Lorna Jane has been designing for since 1989.

We went through the Lorna Jane New Zealand store in October 2026: the fabrics, the lineup, the prices, the return rules and the current offers. One thing up front: prices on the NZ store are in NZ$, and that store only ships to New Zealand addresses. Shoppers elsewhere are pointed to the brand's international lornajane.com site.

The Story: A Fitness Instructor With a Pair of Scissors

According to Lorna Jane's Our Brand page, founder Lorna Jane Clarkson was working as a fitness instructor in the early '80s, when G-string leotards and leg warmers were the uniform. She had other ideas, took a pair of scissors to a swimsuit and started making her own. What began as a side hustle grew into an Australian activewear label that has been trading since 1989, with stores across Australia and New Zealand. Lorna is still the brand's Founder and Chief Creative Officer, and she hosts the brand's Never Give Up podcast.

The idea behind everything is what the brand calls "Active Living": clothes you can train in and then just keep wearing. That's why the store sells sleepwear, linen, denim and knitwear right next to sports bras and bike shorts.

What Makes It Different: Fabrics With Names (and Jobs)

Lorna Jane develops its own activewear fabrics and gives each one a named role. Its Fabrics Guide lists the blends, so you can shop by feel instead of guessing:

  • Nothing 2 See Here™ (71% polyester / 29% elastane): a light-blocking interlock with 4-way stretch and moisture-wicking, built so it isn't see-through when you squat.
  • Liberty (81% nylon / 19% Lycra® elastane): a soft, matte nylon with quick-dry performance, made for wearing all day.
  • Bare Minimum (81% nylon / 19% elastane): brushed nylon with light compression and a gentler, barely-there feel.
  • LJ Elite (75% nylon / 25% elastane): a stronger compression nylon that the brand describes as cool to the touch.
  • Luxe Rib (78% nylon / 22% elastane): a ribbed texture with light compression and a matte finish.

The brand's "Buy Better, Not More" page says garments are fit-checked from first sample to bulk production and tested to a commercial standard for stretch and recovery, pilling, colour fastness and washing.

Amy or Lotus: which legging is for you?

The Amy No Ride leggings are made from sweat-wicking LJ Excel Pro fabric, with a high-rise waistband, a soft-fold front, a hidden rubber edge to keep the waist in place, no front seam, side pockets and a reflective logo. Amy leggings also come with the brand's Active Advantage 12-month quality cover for manufacturing defects. The Lotus No Ride leggings cost NZ$20 less, use LJ Dynamic fabric, and swap the side pockets for a secret back pocket. Buy Amy if you want pockets you can reach mid-run and the extra year of cover. Buy Lotus if you want the soft-fold, no-front-seam look for less.

Which sports bra?

The Free Spirit uses Nothing 2 See Here™ fabric with wide cross-back straps, a V-neckline and a curved underbust panel. The Limited Edition Amy Max Support is in LJ Excel Pro with wide adjustable straps, a compressive underbust band, a back clasp and a hidden mesh lining. If you like to adjust your fit strap by strap, go Amy Max. If you prefer a clean pull-on style, go Free Spirit. Not sure of your size? The size guide lists bust and underbust in centimetres, plus AU, international and UK bra sizes, and suggests C–F cups measure the underbust for Hold and Mould bras.

Lorna Jane FAQ

How does Lorna Jane sizing work?

Most styles run XXS to XXL. The size guide gives bust and underbust measurements in centimetres alongside AU, international and UK bra sizes, and there are separate Sports Bra and Leggings guides on the site.

Are Lorna Jane leggings see-through?

The brand says its Nothing 2 See Here™ fabric uses a light-blocking interlock made so it isn't see-through. Check the fabric named on each product page; Amy leggings use LJ Excel Pro and Lotus leggings use LJ Dynamic.

How should I wash Lorna Jane activewear?

The garment care page recommends a cold wash with like colours, a wash bag, no fabric softener and line drying in the shade instead of tumble drying. Always follow the label on your piece.

Can I order from the NZ store if I live in the U.S.?

The NZ store ships to New Zealand addresses. For orders outside New Zealand, Lorna Jane directs shoppers to its international lornajane.com site, where prices and policies may differ.

Our Verdict

Lorna Jane makes activewear that's meant to be lived in, not just worked out in: named fabrics with published blends, a deep size range, leggings with real pockets and a 12-month cover on the Amy range. Pick Amy for pockets and peace of mind, Lotus for a lower price, and a Flashdance or Liberty pant for the hours after class. Prices on the NZ store are in NZ$, and offers rotate fast, so check our Lorna Jane deals page before you order.
